Smoking Cessation

One of the benefits of smoke-free policies is that they help people to quit smoking. The Minnesota Partnership for Action Against Tobacco (MPAAT) offers stop-smoking services to the people of Minnesota.  These services, called QUITPLAN services, are free of charge.

QUITPLAN Helpline

The QUITPLAN Helpline began as Minnesota’s Tobacco Helpline in 2001. More than 38,000 people have called the telephone counseling service since its inception. Callers talk with a counselor to create a personalized plan to quit.  A caller may receive free nicotine patches or gum if it’s determined appropriate for him or her.  The Helpline also offers a telephone line for Spanish speakers and the hearing-impaired.  QUITPLAN Helpline services are free to people without stop-smoking health insurance coverage. If a caller has coverage, the QUITPLAN Helpline can transfer them directly to their insurer’s counseling line.

Helpline callers are up to seven times more likely to quit smoking than if they try to quit on their own.  Ninety-four percent of people who have used the service say they would recommend it to a friend.
